Beverly City Police Department Bike Patrol

The Beverly City Police Department Bike Patrol quickly enjoyed success as it began its patrols through the local parks, business districts and the residential areas located throughout the city

The Bike Patrol plays in instrumental role in community policing. Officers assigned to the unit make pro-active contacts with people they see while on patrol. The community quickly embraced this program, making it an intricate part of the patrol division.

The purpose of the bike patrol is to increase patrol coverage in areas where traditional patrol vehicles are limited. Parks, alleys, and parking lots are just a few areas where the bike patrols may easily maneuver. The unit is also assigned to special events such as parades through the city, events in the parks and even surveillance of suspicious activity.

Bikes are outfitted with lights, audible warning devices, and a rear carry all pack that holds the necessary police equipment. The bikes are marked with police markings with the officers having a designated bike patrol uniform to easily distinguish them from civilian bike riders.

Regular officers as well as special officers now serve on the unit as it continues to succeed. The department now has three mountain bikes to carry out the assignments of the bike patrol unit.

Some of the duties and responsibilities of the bike patrol unit includes bicycle safety training and talks with youth and adults alike. They also offer bicycle helmets to riders during the training explaining the importance of their use.
